Question: We are thinking of adding on to our home. What are some issues we need to consider before we do so?

Whether your home project is big or small, taking the time to plan it well can make a major difference in both the cost and your level of satisfaction with the finished job.

Good planning begins with asking yourself the following questions:

1 - Do I want to change the environment entirely or are there some aspects of the space that I want to maintain?

2 - How will the room or space be used?

3 - What mood do I want to create? Trendy, Formal, Informal, Theme based, Simple?

4 - How can I make the changes that will not distract from the parts of the home that remain unchanged?

5 - Will furnishings be subject to a lot of wear and tear? What fabrics would work best for this type of environment? What items will I need to purchase or reuse? Don't forget to add this into the cost of the project so you are not left with an empty space that needs furnished.

6 - If I add on, how much space do I really need? Don't guess, get professional help here.

7 - Will I need to make changes in plumbing or electrical, or remove windows or doors? Some of these types of changes can substantially increase the cost, but they may also increase efficiency and save you money in the long run.

8 - How much do I want to spend? Keep in mind there are hidden costs like finding defective wiring or structural problems in your home. It is also a good idea to get an outline of each area that is involved in the construction and breakdown what needs completed - this way you can look at the cost of each different area when bids are recieved.

9 - What type of finishes and fixtures do I want and can afford in the new space? It is best to do some price comparison on bathroom fixtures, tiles, carpets, woods, and whatever else you have in mind to make sure these items will fit into your budget.

10 - Will the plan I have in mind hold its appeal for several years and grow with my families' needs?

Before you begin to get any estimates, plan exactly what you want to achieve in your remodeling adventure. Now is a good time to consult your designer to ensure you have a detailed plan that will give you the most for your money.
