Extreme Makeover, Marietta EditionArticle and Photos Excerpted from The Marietta Times by Sam Shawver on 10/27/2009.
Meaghan Flannery has been spending a lot of time in the hospital lately but, like most 17-year-olds, when she's back home in Marietta her bedroom is a favorite place to hang out.
So this week, thanks to some local volunteers, businesses, and an initiative called "Color Your Corner" at the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Meaghan's bedroom is getting an "extreme makeover."
"This is such a great idea," said mom Angie Flannery. "Meaghan has been hospitalized every three to four weeks - about 150 days this year. And we've developed a good relationship with the excellent staff at Rainbow."
Meaghan has Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes medical and developmental problems.
"She's had some degeneration in the last couple of years, but she's a very happy girl," Angie said. Meaghan is Angie and John Flannery's oldest child. They also have a 13-year-old son, Jacob.
Earlier this year Angie received a phone call telling her that Color Your Corner, a Cleveland-based organization, had offered to help renovate Meaghan's bedroom.
"There had been so much touch and go lately, I was surprised to have some good news - I cried," Angie said.
Debbie Monahan and Halle Chiappone are founders of the Color Your Corner initiative.
"We've worked through the Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital since 2004 to find families that can't do this for themselves," Monahan said. "And by the end of this year we will have completed about 36 bedroom makeovers."
She said fundraisers provide the money to do the renovations, but local volunteers and donations of labor and materials from area businesses help stretch those dollars.
After learning that the Flannerys could use some help, Monahan contacted local interior designer, Pam Holschuh, owner of Copper Leaf Interiors in Marietta.
"She got the entire business community involved," Monahan said.
Holschuh had never heard of Color Your Corner before the organization called her, but she was more than willing to help.
"They asked if I would help coordinate the room makeover from this end," she said. "So since the beginning of summer I've been locating contractors and working with several local businesses who have donated time, labor and goods to the project."
Holschuh said the makeover, which includes upgrades from floor to ceiling, including lighting, ventilation, and extra storage space, should be completed by the end of this week.
Angie Flannery said the storage space will be especially welcome as Meaghan requires a lot of medical equipment.
"It's a lot of work, but we also get a lot of reward from helping these families," Monahan said.
Holschuh said the following businesses have participated in making over Meaghan's room:
